Daniel
Marois
Right-winger Daniel Marois played 350 NHL games for four different clubs in the 80s and 90s. He was a natural goal scorer who could play a feisty game in the corners and in front of the net.
The Montreal native played his amateur hockey in the QMJHL with the Verdun Junior Canadiens and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens. The Toronto Maple Leafs at the 1987 Entry Draft took him 28th overall. During the 1988 Norris Division semifinal versus Detroit, the young winger was recalled and scored a spectacular goal to serve notice that he was a bonafide NHLer.
Marois scored 31 goals as a rookie in 1988-89 then notched a career high 39 the next season while playing on a line with Vince Damphousse and Tom Fergus. The talented trio helped Toronto finish at .500 in 1989-90 for the first time since 1978-79. Over the next two seasons Marois' play lacked consistency and his offensive totals slipped to 15 goals in 1991-92 after Damphousse was traded.
In March, 1992, the young winger was traded to the New York Islanders with Claude Loiselle for Ken Baumgartner and Dave McLlwain. He was a spot player for his new club before back woes began to wreak havoc with his effectiveness. Marois was traded to the Boston Bruins late in 1992-93 and spent much of his time in the minors. He was forced to miss the 1994-95 season after undergoing back surgery. He recovered and signed with the Dallas Stars as a free agent in 1995. Marois was used chiefly to add depth to the farm and eventually re-signed with Toronto though he never played another NHL game. Late in the 1996-97 season Marois moved on to Europe where he competed for the Switzerland's SC Bern and the Adler Mannheim club of Germany. He began the 2001-02 season with the AHL's Saint John Flames.
